The foundation of any edible is a potent cannabutter or oil. Your options are limitless when it comes to making cannabis-infused edibles once you have a solid cannabutter. Whip out your favorite recipe, substitute the butter or oil for cannabutter, and enjoy the ride.
Cannabutter is harder to dose because there are multiple factors that affect the potency. Factors to take into consideration when trying to determine potency are; how long you decarbed your herb, how much herb you used, how potent your herb was etc.. The effects with edibles are known to be more intense and last anywhere from 4-12 hours.
This is also a very stanky process so if you’re trying to keep your hobby low-key, this may not be the best time for you to start making cannabutter.
**Proceed with caution!**
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- 1 cup of butter (don’t go for the healthy stuff, the fatter the better!)
- 1/4 ounce of herb (7-8 grams)
- Cheesecloth
STEP 1: DECARBOXYLATE!
To make cannabutter the first step is to decarb your herb. Decarbing is the process of heating your herb to the right amount to activate the beneficial chemical compounds of cannabis along with THC (the chemical compound that gives you the “high.”) If you do not decarb your herb, you will have a sad end product with little to no effects!
HOW TO DECARB YOUR HERB:
- Preheat your oven to 250°F.
- Break apart your herb.
- Spread your herb out evenly on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
- Let it bake for about 25 minutes. Stir the herb frequently.
❗ Don’t try to grind your herb too fine. It will be a lot harder to strain later on and it may burn in the oven.
❗ Decarbed herb should come out golden/brown.
STEP 2: MAKE YOUR CANNABUTTER
- On low heat, melt the butter in a saucepan or a slow cooker.
- Slowly stir in your herb.
- Cover and allow the mixture to simmer for 3-4 hours. Do not let it boil!
STEP 3: STRAIN AND STORE
Strain the butter with a cheesecloth and store your end product in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. If you don't plan on using your butter within 3 weeks, feel free to pop it in the freezer!
When made to recipe, your cannabutter is typically 25mg per tablespoon.
Happy baking!
